Gráinne McMahon has headed up the news and sports department for the iRadio Group since it was established four years ago in 2007, where she developed a news and sports service aimed at 15-34 year olds which broadcasts to 15 counties in Ireland. At the age of just 26, Gráinne was the youngest news editor in Irish radio at the time of her appointment but it was something Gráinne relished. She recruited, trained and managed the fledgling news and sports team, ensuring that the radio station complied with Broadcasting Authority of Ireland codes and were trained to the highest degree in libel and defamation law. Since then, under Gráinne's leadership, the news team have produced several highly acclaimed documentaries and nominated for a number of awards for their promotion of road safety. In May 2009 Gráinne produced a radio documentary on life in a Belarus orphanage after travelling there with the Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal. Since i102-104 went on air in February 2008, the number of listeners to the station has increased dramatically so that iRadio now attracts 287,000 listeners each and every week. Since Gráinne took up the position of Head of News and Sport at iRadio, she has remained at senior management level, developing a news service that is slick and relevant for the target audience for the West and Northwest. This involves remaining at the forefront of local, regional and national stories and more recently, the delivery of information has expanded to a successful website and social media. In January 2010 Gráinne took over as editor for the Midlands and Northeast. She now leads an established team of journalists, providing relevant news and sports content for both the West/Northwest and Midlands/Northeast. Gráinne has been responsible for the delivery of providing news and sports bulletins over 18 hours a day to both regions. Under her guidance, the iRadio news team received critical acclaim for their General and European Election coverage. With her vast contacts book, Gráinne handles all Public Relations for the iRadio Group and is at the forefront of the promotion of the station in Galway, along with founding shareholder Deborah Fagan. A long established journalist in Galway and the West, Gráinne completed a BA International in Legal Science and French at NUI Galway before undertaking a Masters in Journalism at Dublin City University. She has worked for the Galway Independent as a staff journalist where she also reported from NUIG and GMIT during her time at university. Following her graduation, Gráinne took to the national airwaves at I.N.N before moving to Galway Bay FM where she worked for a number of years. Gráinne followed her love of entertainment and events when she produced, presented and directed her own television show 'Spotlight Galway' on City Channel which was broadcast in Galway and Dublin and focussed on Galway's vibrant cultural and entertainment scene. Gráinne also wrote 'After Dark' a weekly out and about column for the Connacht Tribune Group, where she reported on Galway's social scene and furthered her love of writing with weekly features in Tribune Life. In 2009, while still remaining a key part of iRadio, Gráinne completed her LLB and has just returned from the USA where she sat the New York Bar which would qualify her as an attorney at law. Gráinne continues to freelance both on a local and national basis for publications such as GalwayNow, LimerickNow and Irish Tatler magazines. She has a keen interest in fashion and beauty and regularly MC's and judges fashion shows and charity events.
